1/1/2024 0 Comments Foster freeze carson![]() Last month, when I read the article about the closing of the Fosters Freeze in Wilmington, a multitude of childhood adventures, and misadventures, at that same Fosters Freeze spilled into my mind. If I was going to “work the front,” I had to know the prices and figure the total in my head - just like the other employees. Pencil and paper were not allowed at the serving window, and the employees who worked for my father at the Fosters Freeze were expected to do the math in their heads as they prepared the order. And in those days, cash registers didn’t do the math for you. He understood that math, especially mental math, was not my strong suit. However, not a man to waste time, he turned the driving time into a math drill. ![]() These father-daughter drives started around the time I was 9 years old, and I loved this time alone with my father. Such was the drill that occurred on early Saturday mornings when I drove with my father down Palos Verdes Drive North, past Five Points to the Fosters Freeze in Wilmington. I ordered a 10-cent cone, a 35-cent chocolate malt, a small strawberry sundae and I gave you a $5 bill.
